Your Child Will Learn

Comparing which group has more or less items.

Here's What To Do

1

Together with your child, sort the clean laundry into various groups. First sort the laundry by who it belongs to. Be sure to have clothing for at least two family members in the clean load.

2

Ask your child which family member had more clothes in this load of laundry.

3

Ask your child which family member had less clothes.

4

Put all the laundry back in the basket and sort again. Repeat the questions asked above. Sort by size, color or clothing type.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Select a space to sort the clean laundry together, that can be on a table/countertop, on a bed or a couch. Invite your child to help you take the clean laundry out of the hamper or basket because you will be working together to put it away.
E

Engage:

  • Let’s sort the laundry into two groups, lets do socks and shirts. I will put all the socks in front of me and you put all the shirts in front of you.
  • How else can we sort the laundry?
E

Encourage:

  • Remind your child of the sorting rule and keep them motivated to finish sorting their laundry items.
  • Tell your child that as they sort, they should pay attention to which pile has more clothing items and which has less.
R

Reflect:

  • You did a good job sorting the laundry. Was it hard figuring out which one had more?

Not quite ready?

Focus on showing groups with a big contrast such as one sock and five shirts.

Ready for more?

Work on making groups of the same amount. Such as two groups of three blocks or two groups of two shoes.
