Dance Teacher
Here's What To Do
Tell your child that you will play a game where you will take turns being the dance teacher. “We will teach each other different dance moves and dance around together.”
“First, I’ll show you a dance move and then we’ll do it together.”
Try various movements that use different body parts, like swaying your arms or moving your feet in creative ways. You can even include your favorite dance moves or moves from your culture.
Take turns with your child to lead the game.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Do some simple stretches together first to warm up.
Engage:
- “Let’s pretend to be dance teachers and teach each other some dance moves.”
- “First, let’s think of some of our favorite dances.”
Encourage:
- Include simple, familiar dance moves.
- Describe what you are doing as you do the moves with your child. “I’m moving my arms up and down. Let’s try it together.”
Reflect:
- “Show me your favorite dance move. Why is it your favorite?”
Not quite ready?
After your child has taught you a move and it’s your turn to be the teacher, make the move they taught you just a little more challenging. For example, add a simple hop at the end.
Ready for more?
Include more challenging movements like pausing in different postures, or moving quickly and slowly with more control.

As your child masters this skill...
They’ll demonstrate balance and coordination with complex body movements.
