Clothing Texture

Here's What To Do

1

Show your child the clothing and cloth items.

2

Tell them you’ll touch the items together and describe their texture or how they feel.

3

As you touch them, help your child to describe how they feel by naming the texture using words like “soft,” “rough” or “silky.” They can repeat the new word after you.

4

Ask them to name or point to the textures they like to wear.

Put PEER Into Action

Mother and child play together (animated).
P

Pause:

  • Warm up by taking a few deep breaths together while you hug something comforting like a cushion or stuffed animal. After, ask your child how that item felt.
E

Engage:

  • “Let’s talk about our clothes’ textures or the way they feel.”
  • “We can see which texture we like best.”
E

Encourage:

  • Encourage your child to describe the texture using words like “soft” or “rough.” They can repeat these new words after you too.
  • They can also use gestures to show if they like the texture or not, giving a thumbs up or down, or nodding or shaking their head.
R

Reflect:

  • “Do you like soft or rough clothes?”

Not quite ready?

Introduce one type of texture at a time. For example, touch soft textures. Then, play again another time with rough textures.

Ready for more?

Go on a texture hunt and ask your child to describe how different things feel as they touch them.
