Clothing Likes and Dislikes
Here's What To Do
Talk with your child about the types of clothes they like to wear, and the type of clothes they don’t like to wear.
They can even show you their own clothes or others’ clothes as examples. Take note of your child’s preferences and dislikes e.g. textures and colors.
Show your child the two sheets of paper and the art supplies. Tell your child they can draw the clothes they like to wear on one sheet of paper, and draw the clothes they don’t like on the other sheet of paper.
If you have old clothing or cloth scraps, your child can also cut and glue these to show the types of textures and colors they like or dislike.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Do quick hand exercises like shaking your hands out and opening and closing them to help your child get their hands ready for drawing.
Engage:
- “What kind of clothes do you like to wear? What don’t you like to wear?”
- “You can draw pictures (and use the cloth scraps) to show the kind of clothes you like to wear and those you don’t like.”
Encourage:
- “You can look at your clothes to help you remember which ones you like and which ones you don’t like.”
- Ask your child questions to help them explain their preferences. “What do you like about this __?” “What colors don’t you like?” “How do you like your clothes to feel when you’re wearing them?”
Reflect:
- “Tell me about your drawings please. What do you like to wear? What don’t you like to wear?”
Not quite ready?
Instead of drawing, show your child some of their favorite and least favorite clothing items. Encourage your child to share why they do or don’t like these items.
Ready for more?
Your child can also make drawings to express their preferences for other things like foods.

As your child masters this skill...
They will be able to communicate their preferences regarding things near or on their body.
