Choosing at the Store
Here's What To Do
1
While shopping, encourage your child to help you to collect some of the items.
2
For example, they can:
- Collect their favorite fruit.
- Collect the bread.
- Select a pack of pencils.
- Choose healthy snack items.

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Tell your child that you really appreciate it when they help you and you work as a team.
E
Engage:
- “Can you help me to get the groceries please?”
- “Please bring the bread in the red bag” or “Please choose two of your favorite apples.”
E
Encourage:
- As needed, point to the items that your child should select.
- Allow your child to have as much choice as possible.
R
Reflect:
- “Thank you for helping me. How did it feel when you were helping me?”
Not quite ready?
Gather the materials together. Name the items and describe why you need them.
Ready for more?
Ask your child to gather materials for specific tasks, e.g. “Please get the toys we use when we pretend to cook.”

As your child masters this skill...
They will learn to follow specific directions from adults.
