Caterpillar Stamps
Here's What To Do
1
Set up your project:
- Cover your work space with newspaper or cardboard
- Make three circle stamps (cut a carrot into 3 pieces, or a kitchen sponge into a circle).
- Pour three paint colors onto small plates or a large tray.
2
Show your child how to make a caterpillar's body by stamping circles right next to each other.
3
Let your child complete the body, stamping in whatever direction they'd like.
4
Once the paint is dry, use a marker to add details like a face, antennae, feet, or whatever else they'd like to add!

Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Wiggle your fingers like caterpillar feet.
E
Engage:
- "Let me show you how I use the stamp. I press it in the paint, then I gently press it on the paper."
- "Our caterpillar is dry now, can you draw a face and all of its tiny legs?"
E
Encourage:
- Describe your child's work, like: "I'm noticing that you're changing up the colors you're using, your caterpillar is so colorful!"
- It's okay if your child experiments with mixing up the colors, or paints with the stamp instead of stamping. Experimentation helps them learn!
R
Reflect:
- Ask your child to describe what they made.
Not quite ready?
Let your child experiment with stamps and make an abstract design.
Ready for more?
Help your child make a color pattern in the caterpillar's body.

As your child masters this skill...
They will learn a new technique to make art and be able to describe their artwork.
