Attend A Community Festival
Here's What To Do
Plan to attend a local family-friendly festival in your community. Seek festivals with hands-on activities that will expose your child to different foods, art, crafts, music, performances, community vendors, and civic organizations.
Help your child participate in age-appropriate activities, like clapping hands during a music performance or tasting a new food.
(Optional) Take pictures while attending the festival. Later, look at them with your child and talk about what you saw at the festival.

Put PEER Into Action
Pause:
- Choose a time when your child is rested and ready to attend a public event.
Engage:
- As you enjoy the festival together, talk about what your child is seeing, doing and learning. For example, "The performers are doing flamenco dance! Can you stomp your feet like they are?"
- Review your photos after the event, like: "Remember when we saw the Lion Dance? It was so exciting to see the dancers and the Lion costume."
Encourage:
- Encourage your child if they try something new. Like: "It's so great that you tried this new-to-you food at the festival. Now you know it's yummy!"
- Tell your child how much you like participating in community events with them.
Reflect:
- What did your child think of the festival? Are there any other community events you can plan on attending?
Not quite ready?
If your child feels overwhelmed by the festival, help them celebrate a holiday or family tradition at home instead.
Ready for more?
Check out books from the library related to special events or activities that you experienced at the festival.
