Adding Up Snacks

Here's What To Do

1

Put 5 small pieces of food (like cereal) on a plate. Count with your child.

2

Ask your child: "How many more do you need to add up to 10?"

3

Check their answer. Add [amount child answered] to the plate and count again. Are there 10 total?

4

Repeat, starting with different amounts of food between 1-9. When you're done playing, eat your snack!

E

Encourage:

  • Remind your child that their brain gets stronger when they're working on something tricky.
  • Keep wrong answers low pressure. Try saying, "Hmmm… That's not 10- let's try again!"
R

Reflect:

  • Did any part of that game seem hard? Did any part of it seem easy?

Not quite ready?

Use smaller numbers of snacks (try adding up to 5 first).
