Week 9

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

Picture Rhymes

  1. Cut out 4-8 picture examples of words that will rhyme from magazines, newspapers, and junk mail ads (or, find rhyming objects from around your home, like: a toy cat and a hat, a toy car and a jar, a rag and a bag, a pan and a can).
  2. Put the pictures/items in a bowl and ask your child to take out 2 at a time.
  3. Ask your child if the words rhyme. If they do, it's a match! Put them aside. If the words don't rhyme, return them to the bowl. Keep picking 2 pictures until your child finds a rhyming match.
  4. Repeat until all the rhyming matches have been found.

Math

Color Hunt

  1. Draw lines dividing a piece of paper into 6 sections. Color each section with one of the primary or secondary colors (red, yellow, orange, blue, green, and purple).
  2. Work together to find differently-colored objects in your home.
  3. Ask your child to sort the items by color, and to place them next to the corresponding color section on your paper.
  4. Challenge your child to find a few objects that match each color.

Health & Wellness

Dressing Myself

  1. Help me be as independent as possible in dressing. Choose clothing that is easier for me to put on (like pants with elastic waistbands and tops I can pull over my head). I'll still probably need help with fastenings like buttons and zippers.
  2. Help me understand the front/back and inside/outside of clothing by pointing out the label. Or, use a permanent marker to make an "X" mark on the inside back.
  3. Let me help choose what to wear. You can give me a few choices, or give me some guidance to help me choose.
  4. Place clothing shelves or hooks at my height so I can reach clothing easily. Place a hamper close to where I undress.
