Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Picture Rhymes
- Cut out 4-8 picture examples of words that will rhyme from magazines, newspapers, and junk mail ads (or, find rhyming objects from around your home, like: a toy cat and a hat, a toy car and a jar, a rag and a bag, a pan and a can).
- Put the pictures/items in a bowl and ask your child to take out 2 at a time.
- Ask your child if the words rhyme. If they do, it's a match! Put them aside. If the words don't rhyme, return them to the bowl. Keep picking 2 pictures until your child finds a rhyming match.
- Repeat until all the rhyming matches have been found.
Math
Color Hunt
- Draw lines dividing a piece of paper into 6 sections. Color each section with one of the primary or secondary colors (red, yellow, orange, blue, green, and purple).
- Work together to find differently-colored objects in your home.
- Ask your child to sort the items by color, and to place them next to the corresponding color section on your paper.
- Challenge your child to find a few objects that match each color.
Health & Wellness
Dressing Myself
- Help me be as independent as possible in dressing. Choose clothing that is easier for me to put on (like pants with elastic waistbands and tops I can pull over my head). I'll still probably need help with fastenings like buttons and zippers.
- Help me understand the front/back and inside/outside of clothing by pointing out the label. Or, use a permanent marker to make an "X" mark on the inside back.
- Let me help choose what to wear. You can give me a few choices, or give me some guidance to help me choose.
- Place clothing shelves or hooks at my height so I can reach clothing easily. Place a hamper close to where I undress.
