Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Syllable Movement
- With your child, choose 3 different movements you'll do together. (For example, tapping your head, placing hands on your hips, touching your knees). Tell your child you're going to do a different move to match each part of a word.
- Look around the room and pick an object whose word has 1-3 syllables. Slowly say each syllable while you do the moves you picked (for example: tap your head as you say the first syllable, place your hands on your hips for the second syllable, touch your knees for the third syllable).
- Repeat for the same word, but encourage your child to join in saying the syllables and doing the movements.
- Repeat with different 1-3 syllable words.
Math
Animal Face Shapes
BRING BACK
- Ask your child to choose an animal's face to draw (some ideas: dog, cat, pig, rabbit, koala).
- Have your child draw a large circle on a piece of paper. This will be the outline of the animal's face.
- Look at a picture of the animal (in a book, from the internet, etc.). Talk about different shapes you see in the animal's face (like triangle ears and circle eyes).
- Ask your child to draw these shapes to make the animal's face.
- Find a quiet place with a clear surface to draw.
Approaches to Learning
Wait and Count
- Invite your child to practice waiting.
- Give them a simple counting task to complete when you leave the room (like: counting red things in the room, teddy bears in the room, etc.).
- Walk to another room and come back (spend about 30 seconds outside of the room before you return). Ask your child how many things they counted.
- Repeat, changing the objects your child is counting. As they become more comfortable with the game, ask your child to choose the item they count.
