Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

Letter Sounds

  1. Find pictures (on the internet, in magazines, or in books) of three letter words like cat, bed, sun, etc..
  2. Show your child one picture, and say the sound of the first letter in that word.
  3. When your child answers correctly, invite them to write the letter on a piece of paper (you can write the letter for them if needed).
  4. Continue until you've spelled the entire word together. Repeat for more three-letter words.

Math

Family Dinner Counting

  1. At the beginning of the week, make a chart. Draw 7 columns and label them with every day of the week across the top. Draw as many rows as there are people who eat dinner at your house.
  2. Every night, count how many people are eating dinner at your house.
  3. Have your child write an "X" (or a circle) for each person in that day's column. Invite your child to count the X's and help them write the total at the bottom of each day's column.
  4. At the end of the week, look at your chart and describe what you notice. Compare which days had the most and least people, and which days were the same.

Social Studies

My Family Tree

  1. Ask your child to name as many family members as they can. Write down people's names as your child lists them. Include any and all people you and your child consider family!
  2. Work together to create your own family tree. Use the handout provided by school, print it from this page, or draw your own tree! For each part of the family, ask your child to draw a branch. For each person in that part of the family, ask your child to draw a leaf or fruit.
  3. Write down family members' names on the leaves or fruits.
  4. Ask your child how each person is related to your child (aunt, sister, cousin, godparent, family member, close friends who are part of your family circle, etc.). Talk about the different ways that family members are related to each other.
