Week 49

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

Letters on the Road

  1. While on a long drive or bus ride, ask your child to identify uppercase and lowercase letters on road and traffic signs throughout your journey. (Or, take a walk around your neighborhood or a trip to a store, and play the same game).
  2. Before you leave, write an alphabet list on a piece of paper. Write both upper and lowercase letters (Aa, Bb, Cc, etc.)
  3. Give your child the list so they can circle or cross off the letters as they see them. Encourage your child to say the letters out loud so you can check if they've found the right ones.
  4. Celebrate each letter you find! If your child finds all 26 letters, do a super celebration!

Math

Pattern Play

  1. Gather around 15 small objects in 3 different colors or sizes (like 3 colors of blocks, 3 sizes of paper clips, 3 types of coins)
  2. Arrange them in a pattern like these:
    • Red, red, green, green / red, red, green, green ("AABB" pattern)
    • Small, big, big / small, big, big ("ABB" pattern)
  3. Say the pattern out loud, pointing to each object as you go. Ask your child "What comes next?" and have them add the object to the pattern.
  4. Ask your child to keep making the pattern longer. Repeat with a different pattern or different objects.

Health & Wellness

Let's Make a Tortilla!

  1. Pour an entire 2.2 lb. bag of masa harina into a large bowl. Add 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil. Gradually add about 1 cup hot water (from the tap, not boiling). Stir as you go, and stop adding water when the mixture has a smooth dough texture.
  2. Form the dough into golf-ball sized balls (about 2 Tablespoons of dough). Use a tortilla press to flatten, or put the dough between 2 pieces of parchment paper/wax paper and flatten with a heavy pot or pan. The tortillas should be about 5" wide.
  3. (*Note: adults only for this step!*) Place each tortilla onto a hot comal (or non-stick skillet, or griddle), cooking until browned (about 1 minute on the first side and 2 minutes on the second side). Put finished tortillas in a tortilla warmer or under a clean kitchen towel.
  4. Enjoy plain or add whatever toppings you'd like!
