Week 46

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

May I Take Your Order, Please?

  1. Invite your child to play a restaurant game at the beginning of dinner. They'll be the server, and they need to take everyone's drink orders.
  2. In a notebook, help your child draw pictures of two drink choices (like: water and milk).
  3. Have your child ask what each person wants to drink, and mark an X on their pad next to the drink.
  4. See if your child can report everyone's orders back to you. Let your child help serve the drinks if possible.

Color Hunt

  1. Draw lines dividing a piece of paper into 6 sections. Color each section with one of the primary or secondary colors (red, yellow, orange, blue, green, and purple).
  2. Work together to find differently-colored objects in your home.
  3. Ask your child to sort the items by color, and to place them next to the corresponding color section on your paper.
  4. Challenge your child to find a few objects that match each color.

Water Journal

BRING BACK
  1. For a whole day, ask your child to notice each time water is used.
  2. Make a list: write down each time your child notices water use. (examples: drinking, brushing teeth, flushing the toilet, boiling water for cooking, taking a bath)
  3. At the end of the day, have your child make a water journal from the list. Write a label (like: "brushing teeth") and ask them to draw a picture next to the label.
  4. Talk with your child about where water comes from (before it comes out of the tap) and where it goes after it goes down the drain. Looking at the activities in the water journal, where do you think your family could use less water? Why might that be important?
