Week 45

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

Sight Word Search

  1. Create a 'Sight Words Chart' to keep in your reading area. Sight words are words that your child can learn to recognize without sounding them out.
    • Divide a piece of paper into 10 sections.
    • In each section, write one of these sight words: he, was, that, she, on, they, but, at, with, all
  2. While you're reading, tell your child to look for these words in the book.
  3. If your child notices a sight word, add a check (or star, etc.) to that word's section on your chart. If you notice a sight word on the list, you can prompt your child to find it on the page.
  4. Repeat whenever you read!

Math

Shopping Cart Addition

  1. At the grocery store, pick up one item and show it to your child before putting it in the cart/basket. Pick up one more item, and ask your child how many you would have if you put both in the cart (i.e. 1 apple + 1 more apple = 2 apples).
  2. Repeat with a different item, starting with 2-4 and adding one more (example: 2 garlics plus 1 more garlic= 3 garlics, 3+1=4, 4+1=5)
  3. Next, try adding by 2, 3, and 4 (example: 2 cans plus 2 cans= 4 cans, 1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 2+3, 3+2)

Social-Emotional Learning

Mindful Breaths

  1. Practice a flower breath:
    • Pretend you're smelling a beautiful flower and take a deep breath in through your nose
    • Imagine blowing away dandelion seeds: blow slowly out through the mouth
  2. Practice a snake breath:
    • Breathe in through the mouth with a deep slow inhale
    • Release breath with a "hissing" sound, taking as long as possible
  3. Practice a bunny breath:
    • Pretend to be a bunny sniffing carrots: take 3 quick "sniffs" in through the nose
    • Take 1 long exhale out through the nose
  4. Practice all the breaths nightly before bed. Once your child is comfortable with the breaths, try using them throughout the day:
    • Flower breath: when your child needs to focus
    • Snake breath: when your child needs to slow down mentally and physically
