Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
My Alphabet Book
- Create a 27-page booklet with standard-size paper. Write "My Alphabet Book" on the cover, and write the capital and lowercase letters at the top of each page (A a), one letter per page.
- Turn to any page, and ask your child what letter is on that page. Ask them what the letter's sound is, and to think of a word that begins with that letter.
- Ask your child to draw a picture of that word on the letter page.
- Over time, work on adding pictures for more and more letters. Read your alphabet book together when it's complete!
Math
More or Less?
- Wherever you are (home, playground, bus, store, etc.), direct your child's attention to compare groups of objects. Try to find groups with 5 items or less.
- Ask your child which group has "less" and which group has "more." Start with groups that have a big difference between "less" and "more," so your child will not need to count.
- Once your child identifies "less" and "more" easily, increase the difficulty. Compare two groups that are closer in number, and count to check which has "more" and which has "less."
- Try the game in different locations as you move throughout your day.
Social Studies
Neighborhood Portrait
BRING BACK
- Take a walk or drive around your community with a piece of paper and drawing supplies.
- Ask your child to choose what part of their neighborhood they'd like to draw. Find a safe place to sit where they can observe and draw.
- Prompt your child to notice buildings, vehicles, street lights, traffic signs, and other important features of the place around you.
- Invite your child to make a drawing of all the important features of their neighborhood.
