Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Draw a Story
BRING BACK
- Read a picture book that your child is very familiar with. As you read, point out story elements likecharacters, settings, beginning, middle, and ending.
- When you're done, ask your child to remember the characters and settings. Ask them what the beginning, middle, and end of the story was.
- Fold two pieces of blank paper to make a book; staple the pages along the side or in the corner. Have your child re-create a simple version of the book by drawing one picture for the beginning, one (or more) for the middle, and one for the end. Encourage them to add details about the character and the setting.
- 'Read' your child's version of the book, and write down the words your child uses to explain each picture.
Math
Writing Our Family Phone Numbers
- Hand your child a piece of paper and something to write with.
- Tell your child they will be writing the phone numbers of people in the family.
- Say, “let’s write my phone number first!” Start by saying single digits for your child to write.
- Repeat with the phone numbers of other family members.
Health & Wellness
Clean Up Claps
- Show your child where their things should go when they come home from school.
- Together, decide on a clapping rhythm that can be a part of your clean up song. (Borrow a beat from a song you know or search "hand clap games" on the Internet)
- Slowly chant your Clean Up Claps rhythm while helping your child put things in the right spot. Like this:
- Your shoes go here (clap, clap, clap). Your shoes go here (clap, clap, clap). [repeat until their shoes are in the right spot]
- Repeat for each item they're putting away.
- Repeat the song daily. Celebrate when your child puts everything away correctly!
