Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

Writing About My Things

  1. Have your child gather 2-3 things that belong to them, like toys or things they take to school everyday.
  2. Explain to your child that you're going to practice informational writing, which is when you write facts about something.
  3. Ask your child to tell them facts about each object. Write down everything that they say.
  4. Read your child's 'writing' back to them. Pick one word from their description and have your child practice writing it.

More Silverware

  1. Gather some silverware from the kitchen, like 5 spoons, and place them on the table/countertop. Say: “We have 5 spoons here. Let’s count them: 1, 2, 3,4,5.”
  2. Take 5 forks and place them next to the original group. Say: “Now let’s add 5 forks because we will need forks as well. How many things do we have in all?”
  3. Count together and point to each one as you count: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6, 7, 8, 9, 10! We have 10 pieces of silverware!”
  4. Repeat with different quantities of forks and spoons. Take turns leading the activity.

Science

Night Sky Journal

BRING BACK
  1. Before bedtime, head to a window with a view of the night sky (or head outside). Direct your child's attention to the sky. What do they notice about the sky itself and objects in the sky? What is the weather like?
  2. Make a sky journal by stapling or paper clipping a few pieces of paper into a book. Help your child record their observations in the journal. You can write the day of the week and a few words your child uses to describe the sky, and they can draw what the sky looks like.
  3. Repeat each night over the course of a week or two. What are some of the changes your child notices?
  4. Can't do this at night? Make a "sky journal" instead. Observe clouds and weather during the day instead.
