Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Main Character Journal
- Staple a few sheets of paper together to create a journal about book characters.
- Read a book that your child is familiar with. Explain what a main character is, and ask your child to identify the main character in this book. As you read, point out the important actions of the main character.
- When you finish reading, ask your child to make a drawing of the main character in the journal. Ask them to tell you a few words that describe the character, and write them down on the drawing (or, invite your child to write the words if they'd like).
- Keep the journal near your reading space. Add to the journal over time.
Math
Comparing Dominos
- Use dominos that add up to five. Place two dominos (face up) side by side on the table or countertop.
- Ask your child to look at the dots on each domino. “How many dots are on this one? How about this one? Which has more? Which has less?”
- Encourage them to match dominos with the same number of dots to identify groups that are the "same."
- As you repeat, use words like "more," "less," or "equal" as you compare different dominos together.
Health & Wellness
Goodnight, Body!
- Ask your child to make their toes still, and say "Goodnight toes!"
- Continue naming body parts in order: toes, feet, legs and all the way up to the head. Each time, ask your child to make that part still and then say goodnight. You can practice this relaxation technique along with your child too!
- Repeat each night before bed.
