Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Reading Connections
- Invite your child to read with you and let them choose the book.
- Introduce the title of the book and name the author and illustrator.
- While reading, connect this story to your own life or another book.
- Encourage your child to connect the story to their own life and experiences.
Math
Shape Hunt
- Before you head outside, print out or draw a shape chart that looks like the example chart. Ask your child to practice drawing each of the shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, diamond/rhombus, pentagon) in the left column.
- Bring your chart and something to write with, then set a timer for 10-15 minutes and go outside.
- Look for shapes in the world around you (examples: rectangle door, circle bicycle wheel, pentagon sign). Ask your child to put a small tally mark (short line) on the chart to count each shape they find.
- When the timer goes off, count the tally marks for each shape. Which shape did you find the most? The least?
- "Let's first make a chart so we can keep track of all the shapes we find."
Social-Emotional Learning
The Solution Game
- Tell your child you're going to play "The Solution Game."
- Describe some problems for your child. Here are some to try, or make up your own!
- You and your friend want to play with the same toy truck.
- You want to move something really heavy.
- Ask your child to think of some solutions for each problem. Some examples:
- Take turns.
- Find something else to do.
- Play the Solution Game with real life situations as they come up.
