Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Letters on the Road
- While on a long drive or bus ride, ask your child to identify uppercase and lowercase letters on road and traffic signs throughout your journey. (Or, take a walk around your neighborhood or a trip to a store, and play the same game).
- Before you leave, write an alphabet list on a piece of paper. Write both upper and lowercase letters (Aa, Bb, Cc, etc.)
- Give your child the list so they can circle or cross off the letters as they see them. Encourage your child to say the letters out loud so you can check if they've found the right ones.
- Celebrate each letter you find! If your child finds all 26 letters, do a super celebration!
Math
Kitchen Sorting
- Ask your child for help putting away kitchen items like dishes, utensils, pots. (Before you begin, you can put away items that might not be safe for a child to handle.)
- Before putting items where they belong, ask your child to sort them into categories that might help you put them away.
- Ask your child why they sorted the items this way. If you usually organize items in a different way, explain your system and ask your child to re-sort by a different characteristic.
- (Optional) Ask your child to put items back where they belong. Celebrate when everything is put away!
Health & Wellness
Becoming a Little Helper
- Let me "help" you with simple chores that are fun.
- Some age-appropriate chore ideas for me:
- Dusting with a cloth or sweeping with a toy broom
- Pulling weeds, raking, or picking up sticks
- If I show an interest, try to let me "help" even if it will take longer for us to complete the chore together.
