Week 20

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

A Look in the Library

  1. Go to your local library with your child or children and explore the different sections, floors, or special areas; point out important areas, like the children’s section and check-out/return desk.
  2. Ask your child what kind of book they might like to check out (younger children may need to be given a list of choices).
  3. Introduce your child or children to a librarian and explain that they are there to help people find books. Ask the librarian if they can help you find the kind of book your child is interested in.
  4. Allow your child to choose the book(s) they want to check out. Explain that you'll need to take good care of the books you borrow, and you'll need to return them so other children can enjoy them.

Math

Shape Monsters

BRING BACK
  1. Ask your child to choose and draw a large shape on a piece of paper, and then to cut it out. This will be the monster's head. (Note: some children will need adult help with cutting.)
  2. Have your child draw smaller shapes (like circles, triangles, rectangles, squares) and then cut out those shapes. If you have different colored paper, have them cut shapes out of different colors.
  3. Make a monster! Tell your child to glue or tape the smaller shapes onto the circle to make a monster face. They can draw more details onto the paper shapes if they'd like.
  4. Name your monster! What kind of shapes do they like to eat?

The Solution Game

  1. Tell your child you're going to play "The Solution Game."
  2. Describe some problems for your child. Here are some to try, or make up your own!
    • You and your friend want to play with the same toy truck.
    • You want to move something really heavy.
  3. Ask your child to think of some solutions for each problem. Some examples:
    • Take turns.
    • Find something else to do.
  4. Play the Solution Game with real life situations as they come up.
