Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Language & Literacy
Redesign A Book Cover
BRING BACK
- Have your child select a book to read and ask them to describe what they see on the cover.
- Ask your child what they notice about the art or pictures on the cover and to share what they think the story might be about based on what they see.
- Read the book together.
- Ask your child to draw their own cover for this book. (Optional: Help your child write the title of the book on their cover.)
Math
Counting While We Shop
- When shopping, choose a section of an aisle and ask your child to count a number of items on different shelves (challenge them to count up to 10 if possible).
- For items you're purchasing, ask your child to tell you how many you're putting in your cart or basket. If the amount is 4 or under, challenge them to tell you the amount without pointing and counting.
- Repeat as you move throughout the store.
Science
Where did the Water Go?
- In the morning, fill a clear cup with water (it could be a glass, disposable cup, or measuring cup). Use a marker to draw a line even with the water. If you can't write on the cup, use a piece of tape to mark the line of the water on the cup.
- Place the cup near a sunny window (or if you have a good spot to put it outside on a warm day, the experiment will work more quickly).
- Set a timer for 1-3 hours. When the timer goes off, mark the height of the water. Repeat throughout the day
- Ask your child where they think the water went. Explain that the water evaporated- or turned from a liquid into steam and is now floating in the air.
