Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

May I Take Your Order, Please?

  1. Invite your child to play a restaurant game at the beginning of dinner. They'll be the server, and they need to take everyone's drink orders.
  2. In a notebook, help your child draw pictures of two drink choices (like: water and milk).
  3. Have your child ask what each person wants to drink, and mark an X on their pad next to the drink.
  4. See if your child can report everyone's orders back to you. Let your child help serve the drinks if possible.

Adding Up Snacks

  1. Put 5 small pieces of food (like cereal) on a plate. Count with your child.
  2. Ask your child: "How many more do you need to add up to 10?"
  3. Check their answer. Add [amount child answered] to the plate and count again. Are there 10 total?
  4. Repeat, starting with different amounts of food between 1-9. When you're done playing, eat your snack!

Silly Salad Face

  1. Invite your child to make a Silly Salad Face. Ask them what fruits and vegetables they'd like to use to make a face. Choose from the examples below or whatever else you have on hand:
    • Fruits: Oranges, bananas, blueberries, apple sticks, raisins, grape halves, mango slices
    • Vegetables: Cucumber, shredded carrot, lettuce leaves, cherry tomato halves, bell pepper strips
  2. Wash the fruits and veggies. Show your child how you cut them into smaller pieces they can use to make a face.
  3. Ask your child to use the ingredients to make a funny face on a plate. Let them rearrange the face as many times as they'd like.
  4. Eat your silly salad snack! If you'd like, serve salad dressing or yogurt as a dip on the side.
