Week 14

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

What If…Stories

BRING BACK
  1. After reading a story that your child knows and enjoys, pose a what if scenario to help them create a new story. For example: for a story about The Tortoise and The Hare, say “what if this story was about a ladybug and a grasshopper, what would happen? How would you tell this new story”?
  2. Ask your child to tell you this new story. Write down the story as they tell it to you.
  3. Fold a few pieces of paper in half and staple them so they make a book. Write parts of the "what if" story on different pages.
  4. Tell your child what each page says, and help them draw illustrations to match their story. Read their new book together!

Math

Counting Mix Up

  1. Gather 10 small household objects to count (examples: hair clips, blocks, toothpicks). Place them on a surface in a few straight lines.
  2. Ask your child to count them. Do they count each object only once and end up with the correct total?
  3. Ask your child to cover their eyes, then move the objects into a different arrangement (like a circle, straight line, or a messy cluster). Ask them to count again. Do they still end up with the right amount?
  4. Repeat with different arrangements and/or different amounts of objects.

Plant Scavenger Hunt

  1. Head outside to a park, backyard, trail or other green space.
  2. Search for these parts of trees and plants:
    • Leaf
    • Flower
  3. When you find a plant part, ask your child to describe it (by color, shape, size, or texture).
  4. If you’d like, take photos on your phone and create a special Nature Album.  Do it again at a different time of year and compare photos to see how the plants have changed!
