Week 12

Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Language & Literacy

My Story Box

  1. Give your child a small box with a lid or cover. (Optional: decorate the box.) Cut several small pieces of paper that will go inside the box.
  2. Together with your child, think of some words they know and write one word on each piece of paper. You'll use these words to tell stories, so try to have words that represent characters (people or animals), settings (places), objects, and verbs (actions).
  3. Put the words in the box. Have your child shake the box and pull out 3-5 words. Work together to tell a short story using the words from the box. Write your story on a piece of paper, then read it back when you're finished.
  4. Repeat! How many different stories can you make with the words in the box? (Optional) Over time, you can add new words your child learns to the box.

Math

Shapes All Around

  1. Head outside with your child for a walk.
  2. Point out some objects and ask your child to name what shape they are. Start with things that are squares, circles, and triangles (examples: square windows, circle manhole covers, triangle yield signs).
  3. Now it's their turn! Ask them to search for squares, circles, and triangles as they walk.

Tree Texture Collage

BRING BACK
  1. Head to an area with several trees (ideally different types of trees). Bring a few pieces of paper, tape, and something to make a rubbing (a crayon, piece of chalk, or piece of drawing charcoal).
  2. Stop at the trunk of a tree. Feel the texture of the tree trunk. Hold the piece of paper on the tree bark, and encourage your child to make a rubbing of the texture. (If using a crayon, peel the paper wrapper off and use the side of the crayon instead of the tip.)
  3. Collect any parts of the tree that have fallen (leaves, acorns, seeds, pinecones, twigs, flowers, etc.) and tape them to the paper. If you know what kind of tree it is, write the name of the tree on the paper.
  4. Repeat with other nearby trees. Compare the different tree collages you've made.
