Early Head Start Homework
This Week
Use these activities to learn with your child every day!
Activities for Infants
Language & Literacy
Animal Sounds
- Gather some visual examples of animals; these visual examples can be animal toys, animal flashcards, a book with different pictures of animals, homemade drawings of animals, or cut-outs of animals from a magazine.
- Show these visuals to your child while saying the names of the animals and the sounds they make.
- Your child should be able to see your mouth as you make the sounds.
- Give lots of affirmation to encourage your child to mimic the animal sounds.
Activities for Toddlers
Language & Literacy
Hide and Seek Rooms
- Throughout the day, talk about the names of the rooms we're in. Ask me to find things or people in various rooms.
- Play "hide and seek" in different rooms. Pick a room you'll hide in and tell me where you'll be. Tell me to wait until I call your name and ask me to find you.
- Switch roles- tell me what room to hide in, then go and look for me.
Creativity
Moving to Rhythms
- Turn on some music. Dance for me and match the rhythm of the music (don't worry if you're not a confident dancer, clapping or stomping to the beat counts!).
- Invite me to "dance" with you and encourage me to imitate you. If I can't stand on my own yet, I can dance while sitting or while you're holding me.
- Help me move to the rhythm- bounce or rock me to the beat of the music while carrying me or when I'm in your lap.
- Repeat whenever we hear music!
