Early Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Activities for Infants

Language & Literacy

It’s Book Time

  1. Choose a book that will gain the interest of your infant (soft books, books with textures, board books, picture books, lift-the-flap books).
  2. Sit close while you read the book or let your child hold the book; read the title, name the images on its cover, and then read the book if there are words.
  3. As you read the book, point to images and words while describing what you see.
  4. Allow your child to touch the book (and stick it in their mouth, if they want to!). Pause when something captures their attention or if they have a verbal response.

Grasping a Toy

  1. During playtime, give me small things that are easy to grasp and are safe for me to put in my mouth. Examples:
    • Rattles
    • Teethers
  2. Encourage me to practice grasping things with both my right and left hands.
  3. Let me practice grasping when I'm in different positions. I can grasp while I'm lying on my side, tummy, and back, and in a supported sitting position.
  4. Celebrate when I successfully grasp a toy!

Language & Literacy

Do You Hear What I Hear

  1. Visit a public place where your child will hear different sounds of things in the surrounding environment; examples of places to visit are playgrounds, parks, nature trails, or busy city streets.
  2. Ask your child to listen carefully and tell you when they hear a sound.
  3. Identify what's making the sound, and say the word. Help your child hear the beginning sound of the word. Tell them the letter name that matches the beginning sound.
  4. Repeat with more sounds you hear.

  3. Describe some of our physical characteristics, and point to them in the mirror as you talk about them.
  4. Do a silly dance in the mirror together!
