Week 25

Early Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Activities for Infants

Language & Literacy

It’s Book Time

  1. Choose a book that will gain the interest of your infant (soft books, books with textures, board books, picture books, lift-the-flap books).
  2. Sit close while you read the book or let your child hold the book; read the title, name the images on its cover, and then read the book if there are words.
  3. As you read the book, point to images and words while describing what you see.
  4. Allow your child to touch the book (and stick it in their mouth, if they want to!). Pause when something captures their attention or if they have a verbal response.

Social-Emotional Learning

Laughs and Chuckles

  1. Let’s discover games that make me laugh. Here are some ideas to try:
    • Nuzzling my tummy with your face
    • Playing ‘pat-a-cake’ with my hands or feet
  2. Pause frequently during the game to watch for any signs of delight, or for signs that I need a break.
  3. Another way to make me laugh is by talking to me in a silly way. Use high pitched and animated voices, and exaggerated facial expressions. See what I think is funny.

Picture Walk

  1. Choose a board book to read that has only pictures or just a few words.
  2. Read the title and describe what's inside the book.
  3. Continue reading the book, describing what you see in each picture or making up a simple story to go with the pictures.
  4. Ask and answer your own questions about what's going on in the book.

Social Studies

My Cultural Traditions

  1. Tell your child about the cultural group(s) that your child belongs to. Explain to your child that a cultural group is a set of people who do similar things.
  2. Gather items from your cultural group(s) that your child can touch and explore. Examples:
    • photographs
    • food
  3. Talk about why those items are important to your family's culture, and how they relate to your customs, traditions, or holidays.
  4. Encourage your child to interact with the items and ask questions about them.
