Early Head Start Homework

This Week

Use these activities to learn with your child every day!

Activities for Infants

Math

Shape Walk

  1. Head outside with your child for a walk.
  2. Look for differently-shaped objects at your child's eye level.
  3. Point to the objects and talk about their shape. If possible, trace the shape's outline with your finger.
  4. Try to direct your child's eyes to the object you're talking about by saying their name and pointing to it.

Physical

Exploring My Feet

  1. Help me learn to make different movements with my feet!
  2. During bath time:
    • Splash water on my feet, rub them together, and let me look at them underwater.
    • When I’m drying off, massage my feet with baby lotion. Help me feel and rub my own feet.
  3. After a diaper change:
    • Use my feet to play “peek-a-boo,” “this little piggy,” or another game you know.
  4. When we’re playing on the floor, play “How Does the Animal Walk” game. Make up playful rhythmic movements for different animals using my feet. For example:
    • Elephant: move my feet up and down in big strides
    • Horse: move my feet in a gallop pattern

Physical

Snipping with Scissors

  1. Demonstrate how to snip paper with child-sized safety scissors. Exaggerate your finger movements and say “cut” with every snip.
  2. Let me practice holding and moving the scissors without paper at first. Assist as necessary by placing your hand over my hand.
  3. Hold a small strip of paper for me. Let me practice snipping the edge, making a fringe in the paper. When I’m first learning, I won’t be able to cut along a line yet.
  4. Teach me the rules for safe scissor use. Explain how scissors can cut us just like they cut paper.
