Read a book with your child.

At the end of the story, ask your child who the main character was.

Ask your child to remember what happened in the beginning and end of the story.

Repeat for each book you read this week!

Pause:

  • Put your hands on your head. Take a deep breath and 'use your hands' to help your brain remember a happy memory.

Engage:

  • "The main character is the person or animal the story is about. Who was the main character in this book?"
  • "What happens at the very beginning of that story? How does the story start?"

Encourage:

  • If your child can't remember what happens in the beginning and the end, look through the illustrations to help jog their memory.
  • "You're right, the dog was an important character in the story. But who do we spend the most time with? Maybe we can look at the pictures to help us remember."

Reflect:

  • Is your child able to name the main character, beginning, and ending?
