Fill in the Rhyme

Here's What To Do

1

Select a familiar book with rhyming words to read with your child.

2

While you’re reading the book, say the line with the first rhyming word then pause to have them fill in the missing rhyming word.

3

You can help them by making the beginning sound and encouraging them to think of the word that rhymes with the other word. For example, you say “Fall” and then pause to see if they will say “wall or tall.”

4

Repeat throughout the book with multiple sets of words

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Settle into a cozy spot with your child and get ready to read.
E

Engage:

  • “Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end, like ‘sun’ and ‘fun.’ They end in ‘un.’”
  • “Can you help me read ___? You can tell me the missing rhyming word.”
E

Encourage:

  • Read the lines with both rhyming words. Then, reread the lines and omit the word for your child to fill in.
  • Select lines with the most familiar one-syllable rhyming words.
R

Reflect:

  • “Do you remember some of the rhyming words we read?”

Not quite ready?

After reading the lines with the rhyming words, say the two rhyming words and ask your child to repeat the two words.

Ready for more?

Your child can suggest another word that rhymes with the other two words.
