Family Show and Tell

Here's What To Do

1

Have a family show and tell where each family member shares about something special to them.

2

As each family describes their item, encourage them to use possessive words like “my” or “mine.”

3

Try making family “show and tell” a regular routine, giving family members a chance to listen and learn about one another.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Smile and say something kind to each other like, “I can’t wait to see what you will show us!”
E

Engage:

  • “Each of us will show and describe something that is very special to us.”
  • “What will you show us?”
E

Encourage:

  • Have someone else go first so your child can get an understanding of how to describe their item and use terms like “my” or “mine.”
  • Ask guiding questions to help your child share additional details. They can also respond using gestures if they don’t want to speak.
R

Reflect:

  • “Why did you choose to share about ____? Why is it special to you?”

Not quite ready?

Help your child to describe their item while they use gestures or simple words and phrases.

Ready for more?

Ask follow-up questions to encourage your child to use different tenses and types of words as they respond. For example, “How did you use it yesterday?”
