Clean Up Mix Up
Here's What To Do
1
While you’re cleaning up together, tell your child you’ll place some of the toys in the wrong location.
2
Ask them to tell you which ones are in the wrong place, and to put them in the right place.
3
Let your child take the lead and mix up the clean up location too!
Put PEER Into Action
P
Pause:
- Before cleaning up, quickly review where the toys go. You can make up a funny song or dance around as you look at the clean up spots together.
E
Engage:
- “Let’s play a game while we clean up together.”
- “I’ll put some of the toys in the wrong place. You can tell me which ones are in the wrong place and then move them to the right place.”
E
Encourage:
- Ask questions to help your child notice where something should go.
- “This box has blocks in it. Should the car be in the box with the blocks?”
R
Reflect:
- “Point to where the ____ should go instead.”
Not quite ready?
Don’t mix up the locations. Instead, help your child to put the toys in the correct location. You can also draw pictures together to label each location.
Ready for more?
Your child can practice doing more than one task by dancing or singing as they move the toy from the incorrect location to the correct one.
As your child masters this skill...
They will shift their attention on tasks and people.
