An outdoor toy like a ball or playground chalk

Your Child Will Learn

To observe and copy others to join in play.

Here's What To Do

1

Take your child to a playground. Sit with your child near others who are playing. Gently point out what the other children are doing, such as playing ball or climbing.

2

Show your child how to copy their actions, like joining them on the climbing equipment, or playing with a ball.

3

Acknowledge their willingness to join in the fun and play with others.

4

Keep at it, letting your child become more familiar and comfortable trying new things with others in their community.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Settle yourself with your child in a community playground or park.
E

Engage:

  • “What kinds of things are your friends doing? Which one would you like to try?”
  • “What else could we do to play together?”
E

Encourage:

  • “I like how you’re watching and trying new things with your friends!”
  • "It’s okay if you want to just watch for a while. Let’s try to join the others in a few minutes.”
R

Reflect:

  • “How did it feel when you joined in?”

Not quite ready?

Practice with a stuffed animal copying your child’s movements before joining real play.

Ready for more?

Encourage your child to invite others by using gestures, like handing a toy to a friend or saying, “Come play!”
