Library Adventure

Here's What To Do

1

Make going to the library a part of your weekly routines.

2

Help your child to begin to recognize the library as a place to go and enjoy books. As you approach the library building, see if your child can remember where they’re going.

3

Walk to a familiar spot (like the book area or play space) and hand them a book to turn pages or just let them explore.

4

As they find familiar books, sit down and read them again. Or find new ones for them to enjoy!

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Give your child a hug and remind your child of the rules for being in the library.
E

Engage:

  • "What do you see here that we saw last time?" (Point to books, chairs, or a play area.)
  • "Last time we were here, what did we do?" Offer clues such as, "Did we read books? Play with toys?"
E

Encourage:

  • "You walked right to the books! You remembered where they are!"
  • "You’re pointing at the carpet, we sat there and read together last time!"
R

Reflect:

  • “You did such a good job remembering. What did you like most about our trip to the library today?”

Not quite ready?

Simply say, "This is where we came to read books!" and let them explore freely.

Ready for more?

Let them choose a book and say, "Do you want to read this like last time?" Encourage them to "help" check it out.
