Rhyming Songs and Poems

Here's What To Do

1

Sing your favorite rhyming songs, or say your favorite poems or nursery rhymes together.

2

Point out the rhyming words that you hear in the songs or poems.

3

Emphasize them in the song or poem too, like say them in a loud or whisper voice.

4

When you’re done, use funny voices to repeat them together.

Put PEER Into Action

P

Pause:

  • Settle down together with your child, holding hands as you get ready to rhyme.
E

Engage:

  • “Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end, like ‘bat’ and ‘mat.’ They end in ‘at.’”
  • “Let’s sing ___ and listen for the rhyming words. Let’s say them extra loud or extra soft!”
E

Encourage:

  • Use songs or poems with simple one-syllable word rhymes.
  • It’s fine if your child can’t identify the rhymes on their own, repeat them to help them become familiar with the sounds.
R

Reflect:

  • “What song should we sing next? Do you think there are rhyming words in that song?”

Not quite ready?

Use gestures or pictures as you sing only a few familiar lines together more than once.

Ready for more?

Encourage your child to independently sing a few of the lines of the song, or say a few of the lines of the poem. Use gestures or pictures to help them remember.
